Dusk Call of Brushy Fields
Overview
Although they are classified as a species of sandpiper, woodcocks live in the forest instead of along the shore. During the spring, they are famous for their loud "peent" noises and a twittering sound during their "sky dances" created by specialized wing feathers. They are difficult to see due to their excellent camouflage, secretive nature, and being active after dusk.Male woodcock peenting during display
Conservation
American Woodcocks have declined in Vermont due to loss of habitat. They need moist young forests and dense shrubby habitat for nesting and hunting earthworms. Male woodcock sky dance
