Humming Jewel of Gardens

Ruby-throated Hummingbird

Overview

Vermont's only hummingbird species is often found in gardens, forest edges, and open woodlands. Weighing only 0.1-0.2 ounces, they feed on the nectar of thousands of flowers daily. Their wings beat about 50 times per second allowing them to hover and fly in any direction including backwards. However, this causes them to burn energy extremely fast, and during the daytime, they must feed every 10-15 minutes or they will starve to death. When sleeping at night, they enter a form of hibernation-like sleep which allows them to survive 8-12 hours without eating.
