Bold Voice of Forests
Overview
Blue Jays are known for their noisy behavior and blue color, which is created by light scattering their feather colors instead of pigment. They are highly intelligent birds and are known to store food like squirrels and even use tools. They often mimic hawk calls to scare away other birds at food sources or warn others of predators.
Conservation
Blue Jays are common throughout Vermont, and are particularly important to reforestation since they cache thousands of nuts in the ground, but many are never recovered.
