Familiar Voice of Forests and Backyards

Song

Overview

Chickadees are perhaps the most familiar bird in Vermont. They are known to be curious, highly intelligent, and are frequent visitors to backyard feeders. To survive harsh winter temperatures, chickadees lower their body temperature by 10-12 degrees at night. They are famous for their "chick-a-dee-dee-dee" sound which is used to alert others of food or predators. The more "dees" the higher the danger level is.

Conservation

Chickadees are one of the most common birds in Vermont and their population is continuing to increase.
